I've been sketching this one for a while, pickin' it up and dropping to do something else after like 15 minutes each time. Not sure how long this took me, 3-4 hrs maybe. I'm happy I'm over it and it didn't land into my 'shit-goes-here' folder :)
I've finally forced myself to sit down a little longer with iPad, take the the fact of non-existent pressure sensitivity and lack of cintiq at home (for a time beeing at least), played SC2 ghost from the past trailer for the 50th time and after roughly 3hrs with 'Brushes' app and another 30 seconds with photoshop to crank up the contrast, here is what I've ended up with. Handling the image without pressure sensitivity is really annoying, however, thought me little different approach to handle soft gradients. The option for opacity change based on stroke speed is awesome!
I gotta say, Brushes is so MUCH better app than Sketchbook for iPad.
Hell, it's about time...to update this long forgotten blog :D
Just 3 more days left for the final move.. Time is running fast and days becoming busier towards the end of this week. LOADS of paperwork, you know, usual german thing... Meh. Anyways, I found this piece in workfiles folder few days ago dated as WIP file from 2005. I want to finish this concept at some point once in US, however, figured out its a good oportunity to post it along with this message - makes text reading less boring ;)
.. for a big move! After almost 5 years of living in Germany, Frankfurt, its time to move on. Over last couple of months alot of things happened where most of them where leaning towards a big step that is just 20 days ahead. In May 1st, me, my lovely wife and my little dog are moving to Santa Monica, CA!
It's only this month left for me at Crytek, a company that let me grow in productive and very creative environment. Good things thou never last forever, especially when greater things are awaiting.
Alot of packing and things to be done before final big move and I just can't wait to get a taste of Southern California weather! :)
PS: A little traveler's concept drop for Sunday's evening.
I've snatched little speed whitebox model that Hanno Hagedorn was working on while ago and did little overpaint. This took me roughly 1,5hrs with getting moon-alike environment I thought this model would fit into.
I digged out one anatomy drawing books (struttura uomo) and decided sketch something without looking at any references. I did overnight recycling of older sketches (mainly for background). Getting the character shapes right was quite challenging but worth a try. I have to try more of that in the future, with little more dynamic poses/cam angles...
I've set up the render for 36stairs rollin and meanwhile started playing around with custom PS brushes (mainly, oily lookin ones). This pic took me roughly less than 2hrs. Much more freedom in shapes coming from large brush strokes rather than rigid texture underlay like on the last one. I'm happy with it. And I hope you enjoy it as well.
I've tried to get some detailed environment with copy pastin' method for base sketch. Took couple of textures and photos, mashed them with overlays etc to get the basic concept and composition I had in my head and moved on from there with getting the whole mess into final shape which you can see above. This is not an usual way I'm doin my compositions, however, it was quite interesting exercise, as from the very beginning the image is bound to details -> meaning any composition changes would hurt on underlayed texture consistency. Interesting, but definitely not the way I prefer to do the concepts :)
Yea what if? Anyways, again, another cyberpunk genre piece based on classics but this time little spiced-up version of it. Plus, my lovely wife did help me on that with some ref shots I used to texture this out. Hope you enjoy it!
36 stairs is another short movie coming from award winning Grzegorz Jonkajtys (Cannes Film Festival official selection, Best of show on Siggraph 2007 as some of honourables). Grzegorz mixes this time both CG and live action footage to create a dystopian vision of a world where humans depend on bio-mechanincal alteration to withstand deteriorating climate. As a part of it, I'm helping Grzegorz on matte painting side together with other talented artists. I will keep you posted on that subject and definitely post some work done on it once it's finally released. Meanwhile, get to see the trailer!
So I've watched Blade Runner last night again and it's one of those movies that I just can't get enough off! VFX and art direction done on that movie is still something that I will always refer as absolute #1 cyberpunk classic. So I got into that mood, put Ghost in the Shell soundtracks on my headphones and started painting. This is what I came with after roughly 6hrs. Some textures here and there, browsing thru tokyo-at-night refs. Nothing fancy, tho someting I havn't tried before. And gotta say. I'm actually happy with the result :)
This concept sketch I've been doin for quite a while and decided to give it a final touch tonight.. After watching some crazy Berlin's parkour stunts on youtube I decided to add some urban ninjas into the pic. Would be quite interesting to see something like this on not-so-stable atols :D
